Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus

Text size

A number of different eye conditions can affect babies and children. Some of the most common problems in childhood include amblyopia (lazy eye), strabismus and nasolacrimal duct obstruction (the watery eye).

Early detection is the key to successful treatment, which is why regular eye tests for children are so important. If a test picks up any issues, your child can be seen by a paediatric ophthalmologist at our centre. Initial appointments for children can take 60-90 minutes. You can find more information about some common childhood eye conditions below.

Amblyopia, often known as ‘lazy eye’, is an early-childhood disorder in which a child’s vision does not develop properly. It usually affects one eye, but it can occur in both. Amblyopia affects approximately 4% of children.
