A cataract is a clouding (opacification) of the eye’s natural lens, which helps us focus on objects at different distances. As part of the normal ageing process, changes in the lens can cause it to become cloudy. Left untreated, a cataract can become so dense that it causes blindness — in fact, cataracts are the leading cause of blindness in the world.
The word “cataract” originally meant “waterfall”: the name was chosen because the distorted vision caused by a cataract reminded people of the blurred view seen when looking through a waterfall. If you are concerned about cataract symptoms, or would like to speak with one of our eye doctors directly, book an appointment at Athens EyeCare Clinic.
